Copy.ai picks WorkOS as the sole auth provider for SSO, SCIM, and User Management

Copy.ai is the first GTM AI platform, enabling sales and marketing to create content, automate account research, and prospect at scale.

In just a few years since inception, the company has experienced explosive growth, registering millions of signups and winning over notable Fortune 500 customers like Siemens, ThermoFisher, and Stanley Black & Decker.

As Copy.ai continued its push into the enterprise, the team needed a new auth platform that could also support SSO and SCIM provisioning, which were features that some of these larger companies explicitly requested. With WorkOS, Copy.ai was able to roll out SSO and Directory Sync to their customers in less than 2 weeks, as well as migrating hundreds of thousands of active users via AuthKit and User Management.

Quality documentation coupled with easy integration

According to Chris Lu, the co-founder at Copy.ai, the lack of SSO support was a major blocker for active opportunities with enterprise prospects. The speed at which they could roll out a robust and flexible SSO solution was the number one priority, and the team considered a few options.

“Our team had been using magic.link for auth, but it didn’t cover SSO. We did have some engineers that advocated for building the solution in-house but maintenance and security concerns were significant downsides. Sure, the initial cost might have been low, but I didn’t want engineers spending time building it to standard when there were easier solutions available,” said Chris.

The search for an alternative solution was rather brief, as the team had been aware of WorkOS through word-of-mouth and heard how easy it was to integrate.

In the end, the decision to use WorkOS was straightforward. We saw good feedback from existing customers and reviewing the documentation made us confident that our needs would be addressed.

All in all, Copy.ai was able to ship SSO to their customers in less than 2 weeks, a process that Chris described as “quite seamless.”

Directory Sync presents expansion opportunities with existing customers

Aside from centralized identity management and automated user lifecycle processes, Directory Sync (SCIM provisioning) provided an additional benefit for Copy.ai - improved visibility into product usage across organizations.

In a way, Directory Sync allows us to better visualize the org structure within a company. It’s a great starting point for mapping out which functions or individuals are using our product, and we can use this insight to send more personalized and relevant messaging to our user base.

Migrating hundreds of thousands of active users to WorkOS User Management

After Copy.ai completed integrating SSO and Directory Sync, the next decision they evaluated was whether to migrate all of their user logins to WorkOS from magic.link.

In addition to vendor consolidation and reduced overhead, WorkOS’ pricing model provided a competitive edge. Free support up to 1 million MAUs provided sufficient coverage for Copy.ai as well as significant cost savings.

Leveraging JIT user creations and callbacks to the existing user database, the team successfully migrated hundreds of thousands of active users over an adjusted time flow. Without impacting any of their existing users, Copy.ai was able to achieve a higher standard of reliability and performance.

Collaborating for the continued enterprise expansion

As Copy.ai onboards more enterprise customers to their platform, they have a reliable partner to support their growth. With SSO, Directory Sync, and User Management consolidated into a single provider, the engineering team at Copy.ai can wholly focus on building the best GTM AI Platform for sales and marketing teams.
